The new Enrichment Framework gives primary and secondary schools, and other educational settings, a structure for considering how experiences beyond the classroom support pupils’ education and development.
Our Beyond the Classroom toolkit will help you turn the framework into a practical first-stage plan for your school.
From a collection of activities to a coherent enrichment offer
Most schools already provide enrichment in many different forms. Pupils may take part in clubs, trips, sport, volunteering, performances, leadership opportunities, outdoor learning and residentials.
The important questions are:
- How do these experiences support your school’s priorities?
- Are pupils receiving a sufficiently broad range of opportunities?
- Who is taking part—and who may be missing out?
- What difference do you want enrichment to make?
- How can external partners strengthen what you already provide?
The Department for Education’s Enrichment Framework contains eight benchmarks that schools can use to evaluate and improve their provision.
The guidance is non-statutory and is intended to support schools and colleges to plan, strengthen and review their enrichment offer.
What is included in the Beyond the Classroom toolkit?
The toolkit is a practical resource you can use with your team. It includes:
A summary of the enrichment framework
Understand the five areas of enrichment and translate the eight benchmarks into practical planning questions.
A pupil-journey

Map existing experiences across year groups and identify gaps, repetition or opportunities for progression.

Who is it for?
The toolkit has been designed for:
- headteachers and senior leaders;
- personal-development and enrichment leads;
- curriculum leaders;
- pastoral and inclusion teams;
- transition leads;
- educational visits coordinators;
- DofE managers;
- school business managers;
- trust leaders; and
- colleagues responsible for outdoor learning and residentials.
It can be used by both primary and secondary schools, including pupil referral units, special and alternative-provision settings.
