RYA training courses that build confidence, competence and independence on the water

Whether your child is keen to try sailing for the first time or ready to develop existing skills, our instructor-led courses at Caldecotte Lake offer structured, confidence-building learning in a fun outdoor setting. Courses run as intensive blocks during school holidays, with clear progression routes and certification through Royal Yachting Association (RYA) for sailing and Powerboat training.

Sailing Courses for 10–16 year olds

Set Sail for Adventure: a 4-day sailing programme (RYA Stages 1 and 2).

Over four action-packed days, young people learn how to sail properly through structured sessions that blend clear teaching with lots of time on the water. They will work towards RYA Stage 1 and Stage 2, developing both practical boat-handling skills and the core knowledge needed to sail with increasing independence.

What they will learn and experience

Boat control across a variety of boats:

Understanding steering, sail trim, balance, and how to respond to wind conditions.

Safe rigging techniques:

Setting up equipment correctly and safely, building good habits from day one.

Sailing around a course:

Developing confidence navigating and manoeuvring, with instructor guidance throughout.

Progression

(For those who have already completed Stages 1 and 2) Young people who are already RYA Stage 1 & 2 graduates can progress to RYA Level 3 or 4, which focuses on refining technique and developing higher-level sailing skills. Stages 1 and 2 are a pre-requisite for Levels 3 and 4.

Powerboat Level 2 Handling Course for over 13 year olds

A 2-day course to master safe powerboat driving and handling (Powerboat Level 2 Certificate).

This intensive programme is designed for young people who want real, hands-on experience driving a powerboat, with expert-led coaching that develops judgement as well as practical control. Over two days, participants focus on handling skills and safe decision-making on the water, working towards a recognised Powerboat Level 2 Certificate.
